Analysis of water quality pollution in the Citarum River basin using a geographic information system

Abstract

Background: Citarum River is the largest river in West Java. The Citarum River was named one of the most polluted in the world by Green Cross Switzerland and the Blacksmith Institute in 2013 with third place. The main cause of poor water quality is the disposal of wastewater, limited facilities and infrastructure for wastewater sanitation, low levels of community clean and healthy behavior and livestock waste. Methods: Therefore, it is necessary to have a data classification system using the right algorithm in order to indicate the number of parameter data that will be calculated for quality standards. This data needs to be supported by accurate and easy visualization so that it can be understood by the public. GIS is one of the supporters in delivering accurate and easy information from a visual form. Findings: Lack of information about the impact and potential that can be done for the community is a further problem in the pollution burden. The river water quality pollution index is determined from the resultant maximum value and the average value of each parameter value of the water quality standard. This makes the process of determining the quality of river water to be long. Conclusion: The results showed that the Citarum watershed in Bandung Regency was moderately to lightly polluted. Using 300 data samples, the algorithm achieved very high accuracy, reaching 100% for pollution-index classification, 98.33% for quality-standard classification, 100% for sanitation and hygiene classification, 98.33% for public-bathing classification, and 100% for drinking-water classification. Novelty/Originality of this article: This pollution level research can be used as a consideration by the government and the community who have shared rights and obligations in protecting the Citarum River with an image through a geographic information system on a map that can be seen visually and used as a comparison with the results that will be expected in dealing with the pollution load in the future.
